Oh YOU know I love a speakeasy type restaurant located through a “deli” that feels like a secret club. Oh yes, I do! Last Saturday night after a day at the museum, oysters and cocktails with my sister-in-law, her hubby and baby (in a bar!—Quick, what movie?), it was time for a grown up night out on the town. I chose Sons of Essex, because well, the lower east side is where it’s at these days. Or, so I hear.

Peak thru the window and you’ll see what looks like a sandwich shop, where you order at the counter type place. That’s what it is until you give your name to the “bouncer” and he opens the magical door.

Then, you find this. A booming restaurant, where all the cool kids hang out. Named after the Sons of Liberty, the group of American Patriots who protected the colonists (and the lower east side) from those dirty Brits (oh, you know I love ya).

I’m not very much of a late night owl, so our 8pm dinner was a tad on the early side for said cool kids, but by the time we ordered, the place was packed.

What to order…what to order.

Being Southern, it’s hard for me to resist BBQ ribs. And they were DELICIOUS! It’s not all about the atmosphere here, it’s also about the food.  They were damn good.

But for all you veggie lovers, never fear. They had these roasted brussel sprouts filled to the brim. They made me feel less guilty.

Grand Sachem Cockatil

Or maybe that was the cocktail.

Regardless, my hubby and I had a great night out and even made friends with the couple next to us, who were having a rare night away from their seven month old. They were from New York. He was in finance. She, in fashion. So, between the four of us, we made one  big ole New York/Los Angeles cliché.  Thankfully, they let us stay. Even though we played down our Gangs of New York vibe.

Wanna make the cocktail I had? You should, it was awesome! Click the photo above for a video on how to do it.

Cocktail Hour

And so it seems there are two words in my vocabulary lately–work and cocktails (exactly in that order). Oh, and vacation. But, unfortunately that’s a story for another day. I finally made a visit to Bar Keeper in Silver Lake and it ignited even further my recent obsession with bringing back the cocktail hour. Here’s what I’ve learned:

First things first. You must always have the right outfit, or in this case, be outfitted with
the right barware. Case in point— Cocktail Cups by Charles Schumann. I bought six.

If you are going to make me a [insert gin, vodka] tonic, please make it with Fever-Tree Tonic Water. Seriously, it really is the only tonic worth drinking.

Bitters makes everything better, and Bar Keeper has the biggest and best selection—which you will definitely need if you try to attempt any of these cocktail recipes .

I need a lesson from Marcos Tello, the mixologist behind some of LA’s finest bars i.e. The Edison, First & Hope. Pictured here, my special request at First & Hope for a drink similar to their former Blackberry Cobbler. This one was infused with rosemary—spectacular!

And finally, it’s five o’clock somewhere. Cheers, people!

Hybiscus Rose Margarita-La Esquina

If your college experience was anything like mine (hazy nights filled with lukewarm beer, jungle juice, cheap vanilla vodka and Jello shots) then you can’t blame me for declaring myself a “wine girl” and laying off the hard stuff for a few years.  Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of cocktailing with some very skilled mixologists (Cheers to you, Jim & Roxy Weaver!) and I’ve rediscovered the pleasure of a well made drink.  With summer upon us, I thought I’d “mix things up” and share some of my favorite cocktail recipes for you to enjoy at home.

The Writer’s Block – Served at The Hall Courtyard Brasserie at the Palihouse in West Hollywood.  This is a light and refreshing drink, perfect for a warm summer evening.

Recipe
2 oz. vodka
1/2 oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 oz. apple juice
1/2 oz. cucumber juice
1/4 oz. muscat sparkling wine
*Serve in a martini glass or over ice.  Garnish with a slice of apple, cucumber or lime.

Hibiscus Rose Margarita – Served at La Esquina in New York.  Perhaps my favorite margarita of all time, the flavors of the rose and hibiscus are a perfect compliment to a smooth tequila.

Recipe
2 oz.  white tequila
1/2 oz. Triple Sec
1 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz. hibiscus syrup
1/2 tsp. rose water
*Dip the rim of a margarita or wine glass with sugar and salt.  Combine and shake ingredients. Serve over ice.

Dark and Stormy – Served at the Phoenician Hotel in Phoenix.  This is a great alernative to your standard frat boy rum and coke.  It’s the perfect drink for a night on the town.

Recipe
Fill tall glass with ice
2oz. light rum
2 oz. Barrett’s ginger beer
squeeze of lime (do not leave rind in cocktail)
top with dark rum floater

The Scorpion – Served at Trader Vic’s worldwide.  The citrusy drink that is sure to knock you off your feet – so I suggest consuming this while laying by the pool.  Be sure to use freshly squeezed citrus, the store bought stuff just doesn’t do this drink justice.

Recipe
1 1/2 oz. Trader Vic’s Orgeat Syrup
6 oz. freshly squeezed orange juicce
5 oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
6 oz.  light rum
1 oz. brandy
*Serve over ice and garnish with fresh mint sprigs or an orange wedge, or blend with ice for a frozen treat.

What are some of your favorite cocktails? Feel free to share recipes in the comments section!

Move Over Dust…An Oasis Awaits

royal-palmsI’m not really a “desert person.”  Sure, the sunsets are spectacular, and if you like cacti then I suppose you can find some pretty amazing Saguaro specimens… But, I tend to prefer lush, green surroundings.  In short—I like grass, flowers and babbling streams.

One sweltering Sunday morning, when I couldn’t be bothered to slave over a hot stove and produce breakfast, my fiance decided to treat me to brunch at the Royal Palms Hotel in Phoenix.  As we pulled into the resort, I was immediately taken with the stunning Spanish style architecture, and the charming gardens.  I felt as if we had been transported out of the dusty, dry desert and into a tropical oasis.

Brunch was delicious – a Mediterranean inspired buffet within the on-site restaurant, T. Cook’s.  We happily sipped mimosas on the outdoor terrace, while dining on crab legs, Eggs Benedict and freshly prepared pastries.

royal-palms-hammockFollowing our meal, we snuck off to explore the hotel grounds.  We walked through long, tiled hallways filled with old world antiques, and under blooming arches of bougainvillea and trailing honeysuckle. I spied a perfectly weathered bench, tucked underneath a shade tree in a secluded corner and made a mental note to come back with a good book (and another mimosa!).

While some of the other hotels in Phoenix might be considered more “hip,” if you want a truly luxurious, tranquil experience, The Royal Palms takes the cake.  If you’re a local like me, find an excuse to take advantage of the grounds – whether it’s a Sunday brunch at T. Cook’s, a spa appointment, or a glass of wine at sunset.  If you’re an out of town visitor, looking for accommodations, book a casita and invite me over (I promise to clear my calendar)!
