top-golf-1Don’t get me wrong…I love the simple “date night” of dinner and a movie.  But on a recent Friday night we were looking for a more active group outing than sitting in the dark.  Bowling?  I’ll keep my own shoes on, thank you.  Darts?  With my hand-eye coordination, there’s just too much injury potential.  Then a friend mentioned Top Golf

Not like miniature golf from the days of your youth, Top Golf is a two-level, full-size driving-range. Upon checking in for your round(s), you’ll receive a personalized Membership ID card, which you can load up with game credits.  (And I just love a card with my name on it.  It’s like shopping…cha-ching!)  You’ll use this card at the ball dispenser, where you will get 20 balls per game, each scanned with your personal information.  Up to five people can play at a time, and you can bring your own clubs or rent a set for free.  Choose from six different game options (we played a few different versions to spice up the competition) and let the fun begin.

The game is completely automated.  You just drop your golf ball into the scanner and hit it to the green (or as close as you can get).  The greens are anywhere from 25- to 250-yards out, so playing was as much fun for my non-golfing-self as it was for my golf-crazed husband.  Feedback on how far you drove the ball and where it landed are immediately sent to the electronic monitor in each golf bay, automatically keeping score – and giving you time to gloat over a great shot.

After playing one game and enjoying some cold ones, we ordered up some dinner.  We opted for Foresome Sliders and Mushi (billed as “Mexican Style Sushi” it is basically a burrito cut into delicious little rolls and topped with avocado, salsa and sour cream).  Expecting basic bar food, I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty and well-prepared everything was.  They also offer some creatively named mixed drinks.  I plan on “sampling” those during our next visit.

Looking for a night of family fun?  Batting cages and miniature golf options are available on-site.

Not heading to Dallas any time soon?  Visit other Top Golf locations just outside of Chicago, Washington D.C. or even the UK.
